Is a breast reduction safe?

Q:

I had shingles, now I have post neuralgic severe pain. My breasts are heavy and I can't wear a bra, it's too painful. I am 73 and I have a breast reduction scheduled. Is there anything to worry about? How soon can I drive, swim and oil paint? I am an artist and I use my right arm 95% of the time. Of course the shingles were on my right upper arm and right breast. Thank you

A:

Diana,

Please address your concerns with your surgeon first before your operation. Many times patients with a history of severe shingles will be given medication BEFORE surgery to prevent a recurrence. Best,

Gary R Culbertson, MD, FACS
