What would it cost to correct a recurrent capsular contracture in one breast, and what would be the way to do this?

Q:

I developed capsular contracture after surgery on 9/4/2010.  I had my implant removed with 95% of my "aggressive scar tissue" that formed cut out on 3/4/2011 and replaced it with a new implant.  My right breast feels likes it is starting to tighten up again.  What would be the cost to correct this using Strattice, or removing both implants and doing a lift to address the sagging and loss of volume from having had implants?

A:

I am hoping you are not getting another contracture but if it truly is happening, you could discuss the use of Accolate in an off label manner with your doctor.  There is nothing proven when using this product.  Strattice could be considered, but only if you were willing to accept the unknowns and risk of more surgery to salvage your situation.

As for future costs, you should be aware of what your doctor's revision policy is.  Some doctors don't charge fees and others do so you need to know this before continuing on.

If you do develop another severe contracture, I personally would not encourage you to try your old procedure again.  If you are okay with your native breast tissue volume and the scars that come with a breast lift, then you certainly could entertain the idea of removing your implants and just having a lift.  The costs vary nationwide but if you were in my neighborhood, you are looking at costs in the vicinity of $6500+ inclusive of anesthesia, facility and surgeon fees.  And I do have a very reasonable revision policy.  Good luck in avoiding this risk of augmentation.

A:

A recurrent capsular contracture is very distressing and if that is what is happening, the next step should be something definitive or you may end up with repeated surgeries and revisions. Strattice has been very effective in these situations in my practice, but it is unfortunately not inexpensive.  You would need to work out the details in consultation with your plastic surgeon or another if he/she isn't comfortable using Strattice.  The total costs include professional fees, anesthesia, facility, the Strattice graft, and another new implant, so it will vary quite a lot.
