Is it normal to have pain twinges and a burning sensation in the abdomen two weeks after having a tummy tuck?

Q:

I had a tummy tuck on 8/23.  I notice when I cough or sneeze, I have pain twinges and a burning sensation in the abdomen.  It almost feels like my internal stitches have given away.  Is this a normal feeling during the healing period?

A:

What you describe as unusual pain after a tummy tuck seems normal.  To be sure, discuss this with your surgeon at your next appointment.  An abdominoplasty procedure cuts many nerves.  During healing these nerves frequently cause many unusual sensations as they grow back to resupply sensation to the abdomen. Hopefully, this is what you are feeling.

A:

Most likely, what you are experiencing at 2 weeks post operatively is normal.  If you have any other physical findings such as unusual "bulge" or fluid wave sensation you should see your plastic surgeon for evaluation as soon as possible. Otherwise keep in close communication with him/her.

Best Wishes.

A:

Having occasional twinges of pain after surgery is normal. The magnitude of the pain, would depend on how extensive the work on the muscles was.

It would be wise to bring it to the attention of your plastic surgeon, who knows what was done, and can examine you to make sure these are normal pains and twinges.  Call your plastic surgeon.

Medical advice on the internet is not always accurate and may be conflicting because we do not have the opportunity of a complete history and physical examination.

A:

It is very common to have these type of sensations the first few weeks after a tummy tuck.  Muscle spasms are also common.  I would caution you to support your abdomen while you cough or sneeze for the first 6 weeks because the sutures joining your "six pack" muscles are allowing these muscles to heal together at the midline and the strength of this healing is optimal at six weeks.
