Is pregnancy after a tummy tuck possible?

Q:

I 'm a single 40 year old woman w/22 year old son. My lower abs are in horrible condition from pregnancy & weight gain/loss cycles. I'm considering a tummy tuck summer 2012, I'm also open to possibility of having another baby & am wondering what to expect after having a tummy tuck and possibly becoming pregnant a year or 2 after procedure. Are there any possible risks for the baby because of the procedure? What can I expect to happen with my tummy? How will the newly tightened muscles respond?

A:

Tummy Tucks are extensive procedures and should not be taken lightly. They can also be expensive. Most patients will finish with child bearing before going through an Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck.

A Tummy Tuck usually does not interfere with further pregnancy's. Please tell your surgeon your intentions of future pregnancy's prior to your abdominoplasty. They will most likely caution you that following your pregnancy you probably will be back for a Redo-Tummy Tuck.

Expectations of Tummy Tucks vary but, most patients desire the abdominal appearance that was present before pregnancy or child bearing. The abdominal muscles are often tightened and some patients note an improvement in bowl and bladder function. Many Plastic Surgeons combine Liposuction and Abdominoplasty in a surgical procedure called a LipoAbdominoplasty. This often negates the need for additional Liposuction after an Abdominoplasty.

A:

Tummy tuck tightens the abdominal wall, removes loose abdominal skin, and contours the abdomen to re-create a youthful shape and more fit appearance. Pregnancy will loosen the abdominal wall again, to some degree. Although one study demonstrated safe pregnancy to term in 24 women following tummy tuck, it is generally recommended that the procedure be deferred until after the final pregnancy.

A:

Pregnancy After a Tummy Tuck – I have had only a few patients who have had pregnancies after an abdominoplasty. However, I would not consider doing an abdominoplasty on a patient who is considering having children in the future. Certainly, if this does occur, the patient may need to have another tummy tuck or a mini abdominoplasty later.
