Do you recommend liposuction or bariatric surgery?

Q:

My obesity has caused me major illnesses like diabetes mellitus, hypertension and hyperlipedemia. My doctor has recommended liposuction or bariatric surgery in North or South America. In Pakistan these procedures are in early phase so I am considering a procedure in your country. Do you recommend liposuction or bariatric surgery?

A:

Liposuction is not a procedure for obesity. It is designed to take care of areas that have not responded to weight loss or are present otherwise in someone of normal weight. If you have exhausted all trials of dietary weight loss without success, then the only surgical solution is bariatric surgery. You need a surgeon experienced in this with a full team, including dietitians, since you will be forced to change your eating habits, and internists to monitor your metabolic changes.
