Can one reduce a bulbous tip of the nose using suture techniques without the need for a splint?

Q:

I want to have rhinoplasty.  I am worried about taking time off from work (cannot take 10 days off).  I work in hospitality and cannot go to work while wearing a splint. Would a closed surgery using suture techniques minimize the bruising and the need for wearing a nose splint?

A:

The extent of surgery and amount of time for recovery with a rhinoplasty is often dependent upon what anatomical features must/should be corrected and your expectation of the outcome. Minor corrections often require short recoveries.  Rhinoplasty surgery that requires a septoplasty, septal graft or osteotomies (i.e. breaking of nose ) could require splints and possibly a longer recovery.

Please remember that you probably only want to have this procedure done once in your lifetime.  Take the time off that is required for you to properly recover.  This can be determined by discussing this issue with your rhinoplasty surgeon.  If you cannot commit to taking the time off necessary to recover then, maybe you should wait to have the procedure done.  Proper recovery from any surgical procedure is essential to have a favorable outcome. Consider writing down the three features you want corrected with your rhinoplasty surgery such as, get rid of my hump, a bulbous tip, difficulty breathing, etc. and take that with you when you have your consultation.  I recommend you consult with a member of the ASAPS.  They are experts in rhinoplasty surgery.
