After rhinoplasty to remove a hump on the nose, is there a way to get my old nose back with the hump?

Q:

I just had rhinoplasty two weeks ago.  For as long as I can remember, I wanted to get rid of the hump on my nose; however now I want my old nose back.  With the hump removed, my nose is now more narrow and I do not think that it suits my face.  I know that I have a lot of healing to do, but I am wondering if there is a way to get my old nose back with the hump and the width of what is was.  If so, will my breathing be normal?  I am an athlete and made a stupid mistake.

A:

The results from Rhinoplasty can take many months to be totally visualized.  Please be patient. Often it helps to have a set of your pre operative pictures to place in a mirror to compare your old and new nose.  Ask your surgeon for a few pre operative pictures so you can evaluate the progress with your Rhinoplasty.

It is possible to produce a nasal hump but it is usually a very unusual request. Give your surgery time and discus your concerns with your surgeon. Then, if you are still unhappy seek a consultation with a member of ASAPS.

Best,

Gary R. Culbertson, MD, FACS

You know your healing is not complete.  It is too early and you have not incorporated the new nose shape into your body image.

YOU WILL NOT HAVE YOUR OLD NOSE WITH THE HUMP BACK AGAIN.

You need some psychological support. I suggest you see a psychiatrist to help you through this rough period.

Discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon as you must have REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS.

Wait for any revision for at least one year.  Otherwise you will end up with revision after revision, and you will never be happy.

Expect to pay for the revision surgery.  These are tough facts, but you need to accept them. Work closely with your plastic surgeon.
