Can I have a Rhinoplasty after starting Remicaide?

Q:

I am a 28 year old female with mild to severe Crohn's Disease. I was previously treated with Humira and will be starting Remicaide within the month. Resolving this acute inflammation is a priority to me but I am hoping to have cosmetic surgery on my nose this summer. I am interested in more information from professionals to help evaluate the additional risks involved in cosmetic surgery related to Remicaide and a healing bowel.

A:

This is  great question. Consider starting with the provider who is providing you the treatment/ prescription for the Remicade for written peri-operative recommendations/ clearance on your medication/ Crohn's Disease. Take this clearance and recommendations with you to your surgical consultaion for your surgeon to review.

Normally, Remicade shots are given every 8 weeks. If this is your schedule we usually will wait 6 weeks after the Remicade treatment for surgery. If things go well with surgery then, the Remicade shots are resumed two weeks after surgery. This drug can place you at a slightly increased risk for complications after surgery such as infection.

Hope this is of assistance. Best,
