Practice Philosophy

Your surgeon is the most important factor in the success of your aesthetic (cosmetic surgery). You want a surgeon with extensive training, experience, as well as an experienced eye to give you an enhanced, but natural look.

Sound Plastic Surgery has its roots firmly set in human anatomy and physiology. As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, I have spent many years in education and training that provides a depth of knowledge and experience for your safety. I have extensive surgical training in General Surgery as well as Plastic and Reconstructive surgery. This is the foundation for cosmetic surgery that is now a majority of my practice. In addition to my private practice, I have maintained a clinical appointment as an Associate Professor at UCSD School of Medicine. This has enabled me to stay involved in academics and the training of future surgeons as well as to stay on the cutting edge of clinical Plastic Surgery. Plastic Surgery is an ever-changing field. I continually strive to expand techniques and procedures through my teaching responsibilities as well as regularly attending major scientific meetings.

My experience in the basic sciences and broad experience in cosmetic surgery (since 1980) should give you confidence that I know what surgical procedures will be the right one to choose in your particular case. I can help you understand what surgery can do for you and give you assurance of the outcome beyond the hype and exaggerated claims in the media.

My volunteer community service with the Interface organization takes me to Mexico several times a year where I serve the poor providing free plastic surgical services such as cleft-lip and palate repair, burn scar reconstruction and repair of facial trauma. This has been a very rewarding part of my life and I take pride in participating in this medical mission work for over 20 years.

Surgical Facility

Our surgical facility was totally reconstructed in 1998 and meets all California and National safety standards. We are fully accredited by AAAASF (American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities).

Safety and quality are our primary concerns. We are centrally located adjacent to Interstate 8 freeway in La Mesa, which gives you easy access from all areas of San Diego County. Our private parking area is immediately adjacent to our office (no parking fees, no elevators.) You will find it very convenient and private.

My loyal staff has worked with me for many years. They are dedicated to making your surgical experience pleasant and anxiety free.

Our Skin Care facility is coordinated by Lee-An Gilbert, R.N., member of the Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists. We have a complete supply of appropriate skin care products for both surgical and non-surgical patients.

We offer a variety of micro skin peels, microdermabrasion, laser hair removal with state-of-the-art laser and medical equipment. We also offer cosmetic tattoo enhancement.

Skin Care Products

Dr. Wheeler's office provides a full spectrum of skin care procedures and products.

Lee-An Gilbert, RN, a member of the Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists, is our skin care specialist. She is a licensed registered nurse with advanced training in skin care, as well as critical care.
