I have heard about a relatively new technique called ultrasound cavitation that seems promising in treating cellulite. In fact I know someone who underwent this procedure (however, outside the United States) after pregnancy and had very good results. My question is whether such a procedure has been approved in the U.S. by the FDA and if so where can I find more information about it?

A:

I've never heard of it.  I do know that cellulite is helped by traditional tumescent liposuction.  Don’t worry, if the “Cavitation Technique” provides any advantages at all, it will be in the United States soon.  For your general information, surgery procedures do not undergo any FDA scrutiny.

What is the average cost of an armlift, abdominoplasty, and lower body lift?

A:

Whew.  That is a lot of surgery to perform at one time.  We will do the arms and abdominal lifts in two separate settings to reduce complications.  The arms in Southwest Ohio cost about $4,500 to $8,000.  The abdominoplasty fee ranges from $9,500 to $15,000.  The lower body lifts will run from $12,500 to $20,500.  Such fees do include anesthesia, surgeon, plus facility.

What is the average recovery time for a breast reduction? Also, what is the average cost?

A:

The fee for a breast reduction surgery varies across the United States and world. Fees set by insurance companies are dependant upon the “usual and customary” criteria which they establish in each region.  Having said that, you should also know insurance companies will do all they can not to even consider paying for such surgery.  In our practice we perform breast reductions at set fees in an outpatient surgicenter as a cosmetic procedure.   Physician and facility fees will range from $8,000 to $12,000 total in such a setting.  Complete recovery from a breast reduction is about 4 to 6 weeks, returning to work in 2 weeks.

I underwent a tummy tuck in 2006. I'm curious as to how I can have my scars revised (scar revision). I'm totally satisfied with the tummy tuck, however I have a 360 degree scar that's visible in a bathing suit (male). Can the scar be totally revised or will there always be a scar around my waist?

A:

There will always be a scar present.  Revision usually fails to really help.  However, I like applying external tape (Suture Strips) to scars.  I have found the application of the tape will even soften an old scar. The use of external pressure is well known in the care of burn scars. I have all of my patients apply tape to abdominal scars for six months. Try it.

After having a facelift, what is the likelihood that skin necrosis will cause permanent scarring?  The area affected is about 1/2 inch wide and about 1 1/4 inches long, just in front of the ear.

A:

A facelift usually will not cause skin loss, unless you are a smoker.  Otherwise the likelihood of skin necrosis is very low.
