Michael S. Beckenstein, MD has dual board certifications and is a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery.

Professional Background

Dr. Michael Beckenstein is a board certified and fully credentialed plastic surgeon who completed fellowships and residencies around the country. He has extensive experience in reconstructive and aesthetic surgery in Birmingham. Dr. Beckenstein was born and raised in New York. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree, in Biology, from Union College, in Schenectady, New York. In 1987, he received his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk Virginia. He was elected into the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society.

He completed his internship and General surgical training, in 1992, at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey where he was awarded the Herbert Schulte Award for clinical excellence.

Dr. Beckenstein completed a Plastic Surgery residency at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He continued at the University for a six-month Research Fellowship.

» Fellowship Training To obtain expertise in the fields of breast and aesthetic surgery, he completed a fellowship at the Breast Reconstruction Foundation under Dr Carl Hartrampf Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr Hartrampf is the developer of the TRAM flap and is the foremost authority on this subject. Dr. Beckenstein then went on to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. to train under Dr. Scott L. Spear M.D. Dr. Spear is considered by his peers to be a worldwide expert in aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery and is the co-developer of the anatomic and gel implant systems used today in breast reconstruction and augmentation.

After completing his training at Georgetown, Dr. Beckenstein entered a fellowship in breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery under James C. Grotting, M.D. in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Grotting is world renowned cosmetic (aesthetic) surgeon for microsurgical breast reconstruction and aesthetic surgery. Dr. Beckenstein obtained a vast experience in Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction (UAL) and facial plastic surgery during his training there.

During his fellowships at Georgetown University and in Birmingham, Dr. Beckenstein developed expertise in cosmetic (aesthetic) surgery of the face, the body, and the latest liposuction methods.

Publications and Presentations

Dr. Beckenstein has authored and co-authored several articles in peer reviewed journals as well as several textbook chapters on the subjects of breast, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery. He currently is working on several projects. Dr. Beckenstein is developing several surgical instruments and holds a U.S. patent on a device.
