Is breast reduction performed as an out patient? If in patient, how many days?

A:

Unless there are significant medical issues, most Breast Reduction Surgery is done as an outpatient.  I prefer a Tumescent Technique local anesthesia under heavy sedation for my Breast Reduction sculpture.  Patient awakes relaxed, comfortable, and ready to be discharged shortly after surgery.

Once you have had a breast lift, will it stay or would you have to get it done again in so many years? Also, what is the cost of this procedure?

A:

Breast Lift Surgery can restore the breasts to a more youthful position.  However, it does not stop the forces that made the breast sag over time. A breast that was sagging from the start (not one stretched out by age and gravity) has the best chance to maintain its new lifted position.  Minimizing the stress on the tissue like wearing a bra is one way to help maintain this position.  I have always speculated that a microgravity environment would also help, but have no idea if our long term space station astronauts are even measured for what the time in space does to the breast position.  However, I doubt they stay up there long enough to see any measurable difference.

Beyond that, there is the original problem and what was done.  Different Breast Lift Techniques seem to do much better than others for maintaining the result.  The older skin suspension techniques failed miserably. The Internal Breast Tissue Pillar Suspension, where the breast tissue itself is tightened fares better.

Cost of Breast Lift Surgery depends on the problem to be treated and varies around the world.

What is the average recovery time for a breast reduction? Also, what is the average cost?

A:

Recovery after Female Breast Reduction Surgery is different than for Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia).  Both vary based on the original problem to be treated, what was done, skill of the surgeon, bruising, tissue damage during surgery, and many other factors.  The Tumescent Breast Reduction Technique has minimal swelling, bruising, and discomfort after surgery.  I use my Standard Videos Before and After Breast Reduction Surgery to demonstrate the problem before surgery, swelling, bruising, and limitations in activities for this technique. Although I presribe a strong pain pill, almost all of my patients tell me that plain Tylenol is enough for comfort.  Walking about the day after surgery seems to be no big problem. Raising arms up overhead, bouncing, or otherwise stressing the surgery site increases discomfort.  You can find specific Patient Experiences with Female Breast Reduction Surgery here.

Cost of Breast Reduction depends on the problem to be treated and varies from surgeon to surgeon.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and wanted to have a tummy tuck right after delivery. I will deliver by Caesarean section. Is it possible to coordinate the tummy tuck with the Caesarean section? If so, will the tummy tuck interfere with my ability to breastfeed? Should there be a waiting period after delivery?

A:

Tummy Tuck at the time of Caesarean Section is not a good idea.  Risks are much higher, tissues have yet to stabilize to determine what, if anything will need future sculpture.  Tummy Tuck surgery can involve medications that could be an issue for breast feeding.

After Pregnancy Plastic Surgery has much to offer.  For my patients, I recommend that they wait until their tissues have stabilized.  Weight gained during pregnancy can also be an issue.  In general, weight loss before surgery is better than weight loss after.  What is the sense of tightening/lifting structures, losing weight and seeing them sag again? Although Revision Tummy Tuck may then be an option, that just does not make much sense to me.

Can you have a tummy tuck and hysterectomy performed at the same time?

A:

Yes, a tummy tuck can be done with a hysterectomy when there is no cancer nor infection issues. That link goes to an example of a minituck done just after the hysterectomy. Here are more Before and After Minituck done at same time as hysterectomy. This is elective surgery and safety comes first.
