I am 67 years old and have very large breasts and severe back pain. My bra size is 44 DD. Would insurance or medicare cover the cost of breast reduction in my case?

A:

It is very possible that your medical insurance would cover your surgery.  However, you need to read your policy or talk to your insurance carrier to see if it is a covered procedure.  Most insurance companies that do cover a breast reduction have the same criteria that they are looking for.  They will want verification from your doctor as to what your symptoms are, such as:  back and neck pain, shoulder grooving from your bra straps, possibly rashes under your breasts. They will want to know what you have done to alleviate the symptoms, such as: diet and exercise, using a good support bra, and physical therapy.  If nothing helped your symptoms and you have a minimum of 500 grams of breast tissue to be removed from each breast, then you should be a candidate. Your surgeon's office will know how to help you get approval with your insurance company. You probably will not be able to find a surgeon that will accept Medicare for payment as their reimbursement is very low.  Good luck!
