Q:

How much do breasts have to weight if you're interested in getting a breast reduction?

I'm 5'1" and 134 pounds, and I'm a 34DD. At my last consultation, about 6 years ago, I was told my breasts didn't weigh enough for my insurance to cover the surgery. The process was disheartening, and I don't know if I want to go through it again, only to be denied. Is there an estimate you can give me regarding how much they should weight?

A:

In more recent years, insurance companies have been getting stricter re coverage of breast reduction. Their one "out" to avoid paying is to set high breast weight limits, regardless of your height, weight or symptoms. Remember you have the right to appeal any decision made by your insurance company. Also, get a letter of support from your primary care doctor as well if he/she has recommended you have the procedure. I have been told off the record by several insurance docs over the years that frequently the appeals process is a little more lenient than the initial review.

Good luck.
