Q:

I want implants that were inserted one month ago removed - will a capsulectomy be needed?

I am 27 years old and my breast size was an A cup.  I had 300 cc's, smooth, Silicone gel, high profile implants, under the muscle put in 5 weeks ago.  I really want them removed.  Will I need a capsulectomy?  Will my breasts be the same size as before or even smaller?  Thanks

A:

Five weeks after surgery all you would need is implant removal. Your breasts will most likely return to their previous appearance.

I am concerned that this is a bit drastic so early after your procedure. You should return to your surgeon and discuss this. The first weeks after surgery are a period of adjustment and your emotions can be exaggerated by the stress of surgery.

Communicate your concerns with your surgeon who will help you make the best decision for you. I hope this was helpful.

Q:

Am I too old for a neck lift alone?

I am 48 years old and in excellent health and physical condition.  What bothers me most about my appearance are the vertical bands in my neck which I understand are the platsyma muscles separating with age.  I am nervous about getting a face lift and wondered if a neck lift alone might give me good results.

A:

A definitive answer would require a photo or a consultation. Generally speaking by the time we see significant bands in the neck we also see age associated changes in the lower face. A neck lift can address the bands but will not address the lower face. Your best course of action is to seek out a board certified plastic surgeon for an evaluation. Learn about your surgeon's technique and review before and after photos to understand the results that can be achieved.

I hope this was helpful and I wish you the best.

Q:

After having breast implants and a breast lift a year ago, can I get smaller implants inserted now without having another lift?

I had breast implants and a lift a year ago.  I am not happy with my breasts because they are too large. I am now a size 38 DD.  If I have surgery to have smaller implants inserted would I need to have another breast lift?

A:

The need for a lift is going to be determined by how small you go. I am unaware of the size of your implants and the amount of breast tissue you have. This will be important to understand in deciding the best technique to achieve your goals. A lift may be unnecessary if the small to modest change in implant size is performed.

I would suggest returning to your board certified plastic surgeon to discuss your concerns. I hope this was helpful.

Q:

Is it safe for a person with diabetes to have a breast reduction?

I have very large breasts (size 50-52 DD bra size).  I want to have breast reduction but I am diabetic.  Would this surgery be safe for me?

A:

Well controlled diabetics in good overall health may undergo elective cosmetic surgical procedures with limited risk. Generally speaking there is a slight increase in the incidence of wound healing and local infection.

Other complicating factors are obesity which will certainly increase the risks of healing and infection in addition to compromising the overall cosmetic result.

These are important questions which should be thoroughly addressed by your board certified plastic surgeon.

Q:

How is it possible for breast implants to show up on a mammogram now if I had them removed in 2005?

I had breast implants in 2003 and had them removed in 2005 - my breasts remained large.  During that time I had no mammogram until 2009 at which time I was told that my implants are still there.  I had another mammogram in January 2013 and again was informed I have implants.  How is this possible?

A:

A possible explanation for this radiographic finding is that the capsules were not removed at the time of surgery and fluid accumulated in the space where the implants were. The thickened capsule is seen radiographically and thought to be the implant shell. This would also explain why you did not have a significant reduction in breast volume after your surgery.

An MRI would be a definitive study to determine what is actually present. I would also seek out a board certified plastic surgeon to evaluate you and help with the process.

Good luck and I hope this was helpful.
