Q:
What size will I be after breast reduction?
I want to have a breast reduction. I am presently a size E cup. My insurance has agreed to the removal of 500cc. What size will this bring me down to and will it give me relief from the pain of my large breasts? Is it worth getting the procedure?
A:
Breast reductions have shown improvement in back and neck pain. The reduction has to do more with your breast size and shape than the 500 grams the insurance wants to have removed. Many times with larger breasts I can get them to a full C with a reduction.
Q:
Will breast reduction on only one side even out asymmetry?
I had breast cancer 13 years ago, and had a lumpectomy on the right side. Now as I've gotten older, my breasts are very much uneven. In order to correct this, can I have just the left side (breast) reduced to make it even with my right breast? Would the surgery cost less than a full breast reduction of two breasts?
A:
It depends on your provider but the breast reduction on the normal side should be covered by insurance.
Q:
How would I know if I am a good candidate for a breast reduction?
I am 29 years old, overweight at 5"1' and over 200 pounds. I tell my family doctor that my back hurts when I walk and I have to bend over somewhat to continue walking. I feel this is mainly because of my large, heavy breasts. My doctor tells me to lose weight and to look into buying better supporting bras. He has been giving me 800 mg. of Ibuprophen for the pain which hasn't helped the problem. I also now have to go for a scan of my liver to make sure the Ibuprophen has not damaged it. He has not recommended a breast reduction. Do you think I should change doctors and do you think I am a candidate for a breast reduction?
A:
You should be referred for physical therapy and be referred for a supervised weight loss program. You can also try to get a fitted bra. You should also have documentation from your primary care doctor regarding creams, powders or over the counter medications used for rashes or skin break down in the folds beneath your breasts. These conservative measures will satisfy many criteria of policies as covered benefits for breast reductions.
Q:
Which procedure for loose skin and belly bulge is right for me, tummy tuck or liposuction?
I have had four children, presently weigh 164 pounds and have a belly bulge with some very loose skin. In order to correct this, which would I benefit from the most, a tummy tuck or liposuction?
A:
I like to have people near their goal weight. If this is your weight, then hanging skin and fat is usually best managed by a tummy tuck. Liposuction of the hip, flank and lower back area can be added as desired by you.
Q:
Can I get liposuction and a tummy tuck in the same surgery ?
I have dropped a lot of weight, but my tummy is still quite large and droopy. It is depressing me. Is it possible to have liposuction and a tummy tuck at the same time?
A:
I individualize this for each patient. If you need a tummy tuck, then I evaluate your flanks and lower back because I would prefer to perform liposuction in these areas as well as the abdomen at the same time in order to give you the best result. I typically do very limited liposuction of the front of the abdomen depending on the specific situation of the patient.
