Q:

Breast Lift with Removal of Implants/ Cost?

About 5 years ago I had a breast lift.  Due to the heaviness of my breasts, the doctor said it would be best to have implants placed in to help keep the breasts in place.  I was already a large breasted girl naturally.  With the implants, I am a full DD-E cup.  I never wanted to go larger.  I am now sick of shopping for specialty bras and can't wear an average swimsuit.  I have to buy shirts that are too big so they fit around my bust, and then have them altered.  This is troublesome to me.  I would like to have the implants removed and I am positive I will need another lift and maybe a reduction to try to tighten up my skin.  I'm just wondering how much I am looking at spending.  I believe that my initial surgery was around $3,500.00 total.  I hear that breast implant removal is a little cheaper than getting the implants.  Any information and advice would be helpful so I know exactly what questions to ask my surgeon during a consultation.

Thank you.

A:

Revision breast surgery is dependent on several factors that have to be evaluated for each patient.   A simple removal of implants can leave a patient with a situation that is worse than the initial problem.  You should be seen and examined by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon.  They can best guide you in this process.

I had a breast reduction done two months ago. I am pleased with the outcome but have one concern. Since the surgery, my both breasts are numb underneath my nipples. Can you tell me if this is normal and how long will it be before I get feeling back in them again?

A:

Is this between the nipple and the fold?  It takes several weeks to months for sensation to return after surgery.  It also depends on the technique used to perform the breast reduction.  Do you have a T incision or just a straight incision down the front of the breast?

My insurance company agreed to pay for my breast reduction but only if they remove one pound from each breast.  My question is how much is a pound in cup size?  I wear a size 36 DD. What size would I be after the surgery?

A:

One pound is 453.59 grams.   A cup size is around 200 grams.  Bra size is notoriously inaccurate.  It would require an examination but this is a common method used by insurance companies to deny claims.  Although this scale is published, it has very little scientific merit.

I would like to know if it is possible to have a breast reduction at the same time as a tummy tuck?  Also, is a breast lift automatically done with a breast reduction?  Thanks!

A:

Yes, it is possible to do these procedures at the same time.  It is really the amount of time that is spent on the operating procedures that has to be discussed between your surgeon and yourself.

Q:

MayI transfer fat from one part of my body to my bony legs?

I am a 33 year old female and I have very bony legs. I'm embarrassed to wear dresses or shorts without wearing knee boots. Can I transfer fat from one part of my body to the area around and above my ankles?

A:

Fat grafting is a very useful technique in areas of the torso and the extremities where small amounts of change need to be made.  If you are very thin often it is difficult to find enough useable fat tissue to harvest and process for grafting.  It is a very viable option.
