Q:

Are there any new techniques for a facelift with necklift for men with bald or shaven heads?

Since I am bald and shave my head's remaining hair, I have been told that it is not advisable to perform facelift/neck lift since scars will be noticeable.  Can the huge population of men in the same situation look forward to new techniques in plastic surgery that will address this issue?

A:

Male Facelifts – In patients who are bald the key is to hide the scar in the natural skin creases in the ear to help reposition the patient’s upper cheek and lower neck area while minimizing the scar which will be perceptible for several months only.

Q:

Can I have the tip of my nose lifted without full rhinoplasty?

The tip of my nose drops somewhat.  This makes me feel uncomfortable as my profile looks really weird. Can the surgeon just lift the tip of my nose slightly upward without doing a full rhinoplasty?  Also, would it be cheaper to do just the nose tip?

A:

Tip Rhinoplasty – If a patient does not have any other deformity of the nose, in other words, no dorsal hump or wide nasal base, then a tip rhinoplasty may be in order. However, that is the exception and not the rule. It is optimal to look at the entire nose and see both the nasal tip and dorsum as well. These are somewhat different for the tip versus a full rhinoplasty.

Computer Imaging

Is it bad if a surgeon doesn't have computer imaging to preview your nose before surgery?

A:

Computer Imaging & Rhinoplasty – It is optimal to use computer imaging to allow a patient to preview their nose before surgery. However, it should be presented in the proper way for educational purposes only and they are not a guarantees of results. I’ve done this for well over a decade and have not had a single problem with a patient, if presented in this manner, not as a marketing tool, but as an educational tool.

Q:

Smaller nipples during breast surgery

I just wanted to know if it was possible to have your nipples made smaller as you are getting breast implants, I plan on getting mine done in a few months and want my nipples smaller. Can a surgeon cut them to be smaller and how would it be done?

A:

Smaller Nipples & Breast Implants – Of course you can make the areola smaller when you place the implants as you can use the same incision to place these.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of where a breast implant is placed (ie: behind or in front of the muscle wall)? I am looking to preserve as much muscular function as possible. As well, I am aiming for the most natural shape possible. If I can, how do I look for a surgeon that will give me the stylistic results I desire?

A:

In my opinion, it is highly desirable in most patients to place the saline implant behind the muscle as it looks and feels more natural and has less chance of becoming hard (developing a contracture) over time. This technique also preserves the pectoralis muscle. Seek out a board-certified plastic surgeon, preferably one who is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. You can expect to receive complete information about the procedure, postoperative care and potential risks. According to the ASAPS Bylaws, all ASAPS members must perform this type of surgery only in an accredited outpatient facility, so you have reassurance about the quality of care you will receive. Confirm that your surgeon has privileges to perform your breast augmentation in a hospital setting, as well. Ask to see patient photographs and results, but remember that every patient is different.
