Q:
Should I wait until I am finished having children to get breast implants?
I am 20 years old and after having my first baby 11 months ago (whom I breastfed for 8 months), I am so unhappy with my breasts! They sag and are deflated and they seem much smaller. From what I've read, it's best to do a breast augmentation when you are finished having children. I do plan on having more children, but not for a few years. I feel like I would be able to enjoy my implants long enough before another baby was expected. Should I really wait on breast augmentation?
A:
Hi Molly, If you are breastfeeding, it is best to wait at least 6 months after you stop to undergo a breast reduction. 6-12 months is a good time frame to allow your body to adjust to weight changes, water retention and hormonal changes. Also because you are considering having other children, keep in mind the breasts will go through stretching and other changes again, so it may be best to wait until you feel you are done with pregnancies to avoid the need for additional breast procedures.
To clarify, I am a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic breast augmentation, including all newer aspects of the short scar procedures. I'm also a proud member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). I am board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery. I am also an active member of the American College of Surgeons. I believe that each patient needs to be treated as an individual and we focus on listening. Obviously, I would need to examine you and help you to decide which surgical or non-surgical options are available in your particular case. Thanks for your question. Have a great day! Q:
I am 17 years old. Is it possible to have a mastopexy at this age?
Some say you need to be in your 20's for your breasts to finish developing. How can your breasts continue to change and develop if you already have ptosis? I lost a massive amount of weight rapidly, and despite being young, I lost all fullness from the tops of my breasts. They look like bad implants now and they need to be lifted. Will they get worse if I wait longer to fix them?

A: Hi s. van del,
Thank you for your question.
There are several things to consider here. You are still pretty young. Make sure that you and your parents fully understand the complications and risk of having a breast lift. Also, you need to understand that you may have some scarring which of course will subside over time and may well be worth it to you. You should be in good health and at a stable weight as to avoid further surgeries. I would schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who can go over your options with you.

Q:
Do I need my Primary Care Physician's recommendation to get approval for breast reduction surgery?
I am 24 years old and my breasts are a size D, most likely larger. I want to have breast reduction surgery as my breasts are causing me neck, back and rib problems. I have insurance through the state and I'm not sure if they will approve the surgery. Do I need my primary care physician's recommendation to get approval from my insurance company for the breast reduction surgery? Since my breasts are causing me pain, do you believe that the state insurance will cover this surgery?
A:
Hi Jessica, Thanks for your question!
Although your insurance is through the state, unless it is an HMO, there is usually no need to have your primary care physician provide a recommendation. Most insurances (state-issued included) will consider surgeries as long as they are medically necessary. You state you are seeking the reduction due to neck, back and rib problems and if this is affecting your daily life and hindering you from working, then your insurance will take this into consideration when providing coverage for the surgery. This being said, it would not hurt for your primary care physician to provide any medical documentation they may have, which may help your insurance company better understand the need for the surgery.

Over how long a period does it take to get fat injections in the lower part of the legs? Is this safe and could there be any side effects from the process?
A:
Thank you for your question.
Because the body will absorb some of the fat over time, a board certified plastic surgeon will recommend the injections be repeated several times over a specified period of time. This period of time and number of injections could vary based on the desired look you are hoping to achieve. Fat injections are safe when they are performed by a board certified plastic surgeon and side effects, if any, can be explained by your plastic surgeon and can be further avoided by following his/her specific instructions for before and after care.

Q:
Does having breast implants also lift your breasts?
Does having breast implants also lift your breasts?
A:
Thank you for your question.
Breast implants will give a slight lift, but it will depend on how low your breasts currently are and the look you are hoping to achieve. A board certified plastic surgeon will advise if the implants will add enough volume to the breast or if a lift is also recommended.
