Dr. Wilkinson entered the practice of plastic surgery in the United States Air Force at a time when cosmetic surgery was allowed and received much of his experience working with surgeons in the military at that time. Many of these patients are still seen 30 years later. After considering many offers of academic positions, Dr. Wilkinson accepted the chairmanship at The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, inheriting a full residency program. All the residents are trained under Dr. Wilkinson have passed their boards in plastic surgery. When changes within the university system occurred, Dr. Wilkinson began a private practice in San Antonio and has continued to support the university training systems to this day. The majority of his teaching is now for national and international plastic surgery groups and teaching courses that he and colleagues present yearly at the national meetings of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the premier world group of cosmetic surgery.

Publications and Presentations

As one of the “best selling authors” for Springer-Verlag (New York), Dr. Wilkinson is the sole and senior author of two plastic surgery textbooks, Practical Procedures in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and Circumaerolar Breast Surgery. His newest textbook, The Atlas of Liposuction is in preparation for Saunders/Mosby, New York. Dr. Wilkinson is also the author of many scientific papers and practical advice columns for professional assistant groups in plastic surgery.

Hobbies and Interests

Dr. Wilkinson has been an accomplished polo player and equestrian beginning with his association with the United States Olympic Committee and as an officer of the United States Modern Pentathalon Association. His interest in the five sports was soon replaced by a full time occupation in competitive polo at the Retama Polo Center in San Antonio. Dr. Wilkinson and his wife Suzanne have a ranch which races longhorn cattle, exotics and horses and also hosts guests in a bed and breakfast.
