Doctor facing charges due to patient’s death after laser liposuction
January 5, 2010
A medical commission in California recently charged a doctor at a Bellevue body contouring facility with professional misconduct in the wake of a patient’s death. Officials claim that he failed to perform a laser-assisted liposuction procedure up to state standards resulting in the death of a patient, NBC affiliate KING reports.
An independent investigation was launched shortly after the death of 28-year-old Aura Javellana. The facility claimed that her death was not the result of anything they did, but state investigators disagreed.
The Medical Quality Assistance Commission brought a number of charges against Dr. Marco Sobrino, saying that he failed to explain the risks of the procedure beforehand, did not document that he performed a physical exam and didn't monitor for stability.
Medical examiners say that the patient died from “acute lidocaine intoxication” that resulted from a mixture used to suppress pain. The commission alleges that Sobrino did not track how much of the mixture he gave her, and did not oversee the mixing process. Dr. Sobrino is also not board certified in plastic surgery.
