Doctors discourage discount Botox injections
December 16, 2010
At the recent grand opening of a gym in Tampa Bay, Florida, consumers were given the opportunity to receive Botox injections for as little as seven dollars. Although some may jump at the opportunity to look younger at such a little cost, experts warn that such promotions are dangerous and should be avoided, the St. Petersburg Times reports.
Botox injections were the most frequently requested cosmetic procedure in 2009, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, with more than 2.5 million injections performed that year. However, the popular treatment method has led some less-than-reputable purveyors to pop up, attracting customers with low prices. Although the effects of Botox are not permanent, incorrectly administering the neurotoxin or using illegal product from a foreign country can lead to serious complications.
A spokeswoman for Botox manufacturer, Allergan, stated: "Only a licensed and trained physician who specializes in aesthetic medicine — like a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon — should administer Botox Cosmetic as this is a technique-sensitive procedure and one that should only be administered in a proper medical setting, like a doctor's office."
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery agrees with this statement and advises patients to find a board-certified member of a core-society at www.injectablesafety.org.
