A 28 year old Georgia woman has been arrested for performing various cosmetic and weight loss procedures on patients without a license.

According to CBS News, Kristie Johnson owned the Omni Medical Center in Peachtree City for eight months before relocating the business to Douglasville. Several clients filed complaints after they received treatments including injections of Botox, laser treatments and hormone injections. They also contacted the news station, which started investigating the facility. 

"They believed she was a physician's assistant and this was an appropriate course of conduct for her to be going down," attorney Ken Bernard, who is representing three of Johnson's former patients, told the news provider.

One man alleges that he was left without skin in some spots and with damaged nerves following a laser tattoo removal he had at the medical center.

"It just looked like any other medical office until we got the complaint," Peachtree City police lieutenant Jason Epps told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. "She didn't have any license to do the procedures that she was doing."

Johnson has been charged with six counts of practicing medicine without a license as well as administering a controlled substance. Meanwhile, police are asking anyone who underwent treatments at her business to contact them.

Officials say it is important for the public to ensure anyone performing cosmetic procedures such as Botulinum Toxin Type A injections, hyaluronic acid injections, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, laser treatments or any more invasive plastic surgery procedure be licensed and board-certified.

Individuals can ensure their physician is licensed by contacting their state medical board.

Choosing a doctor who is a board-certified plastic surgeon ensures he or she has been specifically trained to perform these procedures. The American Board of Plastic Surgery promotes “safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and maintenance of certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.”

A surgeon that is a member of ASAPS will not only be board-certified, but will most likely have significant experience performing cosmetic procedures.
