British Medical Journal reports on the dreaded redheaded surgical patient

There’s an old saying, “If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead.” This is especially true among doctors who claim that redheaded surgical patients have excessive bleeding, a reduced pain threshold and an increased tendency to develop hernias. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published results of a scientific literature survey that searched the terms “red hair,” “pain” and “surgery” to find out what, if anything makes redheads unique surgical candidates. Concierge medicine offers a vast array of services at all price points

The term concierge suggests a world of self-indulgence, but the basic model of concierge medicine may simply provide good healthcare. The January 2011 issue of Town & Country, reports on this trend, citing as an example, MDVIP, one of the largest providers of concierge medicine. MDVIP has 430 physicians in 30 states plus the District of Columbia. For an annual fee ranging from $1,500 to $1,800, you can receive unrestricted doctor access by phone, text and email; house calls, if necessary; a comprehensive annual exam and office appointments of no less than half an hour.

Man sent back to U.S. after impersonating plastic surgeon in Dubai

A man from Tigard, Oregon, was recently returned to the United States to face drug charges after being held in Dubai last year for impersonating a plastic surgeon. Steven Moos, 41, was held in the United Arab Emirates capital after it was discovered that he was performing unsanctioned cosmetic procedures without any training, The Oregonian reports.

Book sold at auction that contains origin of rhinoplasty

A book that dates back to the 16th century was recently sold at auction, and it contains what is believed to be one of the first depictions of rhinoplasty (surgery to reshape the nose). The book, which was published in 1597, sold for £11,000 (around $16,000) to a plastic surgeon, The UK Based Daily Telegraph reports.

Model pleads not guilty to performing injections without a license

A model from New Brunswick, New Jersey, recently appeared in court to answer to charges that she performed cosmetic procedures without a license. Anivia Cruz-Dilworth, 28, pleaded not guilty a month after charges were brought against her after she treated at least six different patients, the New Jersey-based newspaper The Star-Ledger reports.
