Rise in male plastic surgery prompts surgeons to mix things up
January 28, 2013
Over the past few years, there have been many reports and articles discussing the increasing popularity of plastic surgery among men. There was a time when cosmetic surgery carried a stigma, especially for the male half of the population, but modern men aren't shy about seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon for a little nip and tuck. With the increase in male patients come a few changes in how plastic surgery facilities do business, reports Metro.
"It now accounts for 25 percent of my patients, and it's increasing steadily" a New Jersey-based cosmetic physician told the news source about the increase in male patients at his clinic. "I used to have Vogue and Cosmo in my waiting room - now I have Sports Illustrated and car magazines."
He explains that many men want treatments similar to his female patients desire, but still approach aesthetic procedures differently. Botox injections are popular among male patients, because they can be done in a short amount of time and it's unlikely that many people will make comments or draw attention to their new look.
Physical differences between males and females also come into play, the news outlet reports. For example, men are less likely to develop cellulite, so treatments like Cellulaze are less common among male patients.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), in 2011, men had nearly 800,000 cosmetic procedures, accounting for 9 percent of the total number of procedures carried out by ASAPS doctors that year. That figure represents a 121 percent increase from the number of male patients going under the knife in 1997. Among the most popular procedures for men were rhinoplasty, liposuction, eyelid surgery, male breast reduction and facelifts.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is recognized as the world’s leading organization devoted entirely to aesthetic plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine of the face and body. ASAPS is comprised of over 2,600 Plastic Surgeons; active members are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (USA) or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and have extensive training in the complete spectrum of surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. International active members are certified by equivalent boards of their respective countries. All members worldwide adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and must meet stringent membership requirements.
