Type, location of fat matters in liposuction patients
January 7, 2010
Many Americans are looking for ways to improve their physiques by shedding a few pounds, and one of the most popular cosmetic procedures, liposuction, is aimed toward that end. However, some patients are better candidates for the body contouring treatment than others, the website EmpowHer.com reports.
Experts are sure to make the distinction between the two types of fat: subcutaneous and visceral. Doctors from Harvard Medical School told the news source that subcutaneous is best addressed with liposuction because it lies just beneath the skin and is typically responsible for problem areas such as love handles.
Conversely, visceral fat that surrounds the organs can only be reduced through physical activity and dieting. This fat produces hormones and chemicals that disturb normal body processes. Therefore, liposuction alone is not the best course of action for individuals with a significant weight problem, the news provider reports.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, liposuction was a popular procedure among both men and women in 2009. More than 243,000 total procedures were performed to both genders during the year.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is recognized as the world's leading organization devoted entirely to aesthetic plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine of the face and body.
