Aesthetic Society President Elected Vice-Chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery
New York, NY (May 23, 2006) — The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) President, Dr. James Stuzin, elected last month at the Aesthetic Society's annual meeting in Orlando, can add another title to his list of credentials. This month, the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) has elected the Miami-based plastic surgeon as Vice Chair. Certified by the ABPS in 1989, Stuzin had previously served as a Director from 2002 until 2006. In 2008, Stuzin will formally become the ABPS Chair.
“At a time when people are increasingly seeking plastic surgery at home and abroad, it is important to have an institution like the American Board of Plastic Surgery certifying physicians to ensure both competency and patient safety. Public safety is the primary goal of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is why we stress that the public seek out board certified plastic surgeons,” said Dr. Stuzin. “All of the Aesthetic Society's Public Education literature reminds patients to check their surgeon's credentials, and warns that a doctor's claim of being ‘board certified' doesn't necessarily hold weight. Always make sure to ask the doctor to specify which board.” The ABPS is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) to certify doctors in the specialty of plastic surgery.
Dr. Stuzin received his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville . He served his internship and general surgery residency at the University of Washington Affiliated Hospitals in Seattle . He completed a plastic surgery residency at New York University Hospital in New York City , followed by two fellowships in craniofacial surgery at the University of Miami Hospital and UCLA School of Medicine in Los Angeles . Dr. Stuzin is the Co-Editor of the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The American Board of Plastic Surgery, formed in 1937, makes it its mission to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification and recertification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists. Each of the Aesthetic Society's 2300 members has been certified by the ABPS.
The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), is recognized as the world’s leading organization devoted entirely to aesthetic plastic surgery and cosmetic medicine of the face and body. ASAPS is comprised of over 2,600 Plastic Surgeons; active members are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (USA) or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and have extensive training in the complete spectrum of surgical and non-surgical aesthetic procedures. International active members are certified by equivalent boards of their respective countries. All members worldwide adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and must meet stringent membership requirements.
