Meeting 2000: Journalistic Achievement Awards - ASAPS Honors Journalists Covering Aesthetic Surgery

Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (May 15, 2000) — Winners of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) 2000 Journalistic Achievement Awards were announced today at the ASAPS Annual Meeting in Lake Buena Vista. Winners were chosen from nearly 50 entries submitted by journalists and ASAPS-member plastic surgeons. All articles or broadcasts considered for the 2000 awards were published or aired between January 1 and December 31, 1999.

First place winners are: Television News -- Dr. Todd Husty, Medical Reporter, and Shawn Ricker, Medical Producer, WESH-TV, Winter Park, Fla. for a segment on plastic surgery credentials and office accreditation (nominated by WESH-TV); Television Feature -- Diane Sawyer, Correspondent, and Roberta Gordon, Producer, ABC "20/20" for a segment entitled "Surgery Seminars," an investigative piece about doctors who "learn" cosmetic surgery through weekend courses (nominated by ABC-TV); Magazine - Janet Carlson Freed, Beauty and Health Director, Town and Country, for "Comprehensive Guide to Cosmetic Surgery" (nominated by Town and Country); Newspaper - Jane Glenn Haas, The Orange County Register, Santa Ana, Calif. for "Mirror, Mirror," a first-person account of a facelift (nominated by ASAPS member Bruce Achauer, MD); and Radio - Joanie Greggains, KGO-Radio, Sausalito, Calif. for "The Joanie Greggains Show" interview on plastic surgery (nominated by ASAPS member Brunno Ristow, MD).

A special Documentary award was also presented for "Tempest in a D Cup," a chronicle of the breast implant controversy, which aired on British TV Channel 4 and was nominated by ASAPS member Garry Brody, MD. Entries named as runners-up were from: WHDH-TV, Boston, Mass.; "Dateline" NBC; Mirabella, and The Wall Street Journal.
