Pittsburgh Plastic Surgeon is New President of American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery

Aesthetic Society Elects Top Officers at 2012 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, Canada

New York, NY (May 6, 2012) — Pittsburgh plastic surgeon Leo R. McCafferty MD, is the new President of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).   The Aesthetic Society, with nearly 2,600 members, is the leading national organization of board-certified plastic surgeons specializing in cosmetic surgery of the face and body.  The election of new officers was held on May 6th, during the ASAPS 2012 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, B.C., Canada which was attended by plastic surgeons from around the world. 

Dr. McCafferty is in private practice in Pittsburgh, PA and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine and is the Chairman of the Board and immediate past President of the Allegheny County Medical Society, the largest County Medical Society in the state of Pennsylvania. An Aesthetic Society Member since 1993, Dr. McCafferty currently serves on multiple Society committees and as Chair of the Industry Policy Committee.   In 2006 he was the recipient of the Aesthetic Society’s Tiffany Award for Best Scientific Presentation.  He is past President of the D. Ralph Millard, Jr., M.D. Plastic Surgery Society.  Dr. McCafferty has served as the Plastic Surgeon for the men's and women's professional U.S. Open Golf Championships and is the Plastic Surgery consultant to the Pittsburgh Steelers. 

After completing his internship and residency in General Surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. McCafferty trained in Plastic Surgery at the University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida under the world-renowned plastic surgeon, D. Ralph Millard, Jr., M.D.  Prior to his return to Pittsburgh, Dr. McCafferty was Assistant Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Miami and Chief of Staff Services at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Dr. McCafferty was certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) in 1989.

Other new Aesthetic Society officers on the Executive Committee are: 

President-Elect:  Jack Fisher, MD of Nashville, TN. An Aesthetic Society Member since 1990, Dr. Fisher is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Vanderbilt University.  Dr. Fisher served as the Chair of the Symposium Committee for three years and currently serves as the Education Commissioner and Chair of the Program Committee.  He currently serves as a board member of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF). Dr. Fisher also is the recipient of the Aesthetic Society’s Award for Best Panel Moderator in 2004 and 2006. 

Vice President:  Michael C. Edwards, MD of Las Vegas, NV.  An Aesthetic Society Member since 2002, Dr. Edwards served in the United States Air Force for 19 years.  Dr. Edwards is currently the Chair of the Finance and Investment, and Fellowship Review Committees.  He currently serves as a board member of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF). 

Treasurer:  James C. Grotting, MD of Birmingham, AL.  An Aesthetic Society Member since 1992, Dr. Grotting is in private practice in Birmingham, AL and is a Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and The University of Wisconsin, Madison. He is a senior examiner for the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Grotting currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Aesthetic Society’s Education Commission, and serves on multiple Society committees.  He serves on numerous editorial boards and is the author of five major textbooks in plastic surgery. Dr. Grotting has provided free plastic surgery for children with facial deformities in developing countries, through Operation Smile, since 1987. 

Secretary:  Daniel C. Mills, II, MD of Laguna Beach, CA.  An Aesthetic Society Member since 1992, Dr. Mills is in private practice and has served as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. Dr. Mills currently serves as Chair of the Aesthetic Society’s Communications Commission, and serves on multiple Society committees.  He currently serves as a board member of the Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation (ASERF), and is the past president of the California Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Mills has provided free plastic surgery for impoverished children with congenital and acquired deformities in developing countries, through Operation Good Samaritan, since 1995.
