Skin Care 2011 - Revolutionary Ideas in Plastic Surgical Skin Care
Looking at Hot Topics in Skin Care at the 17th SPSSCS Annual Meeting
Boston, MA – (May 4, 2011) – The Society of Plastic Surgical Skin Care Specialists (SPSSCS) celebrates its 17th Annual Meeting, Skin Care 2011 – Revolutionary Ideas in Plastic Surgical Skin Care, to be held Boston, MA, May 4-7, 2011. The meeting offers educational seminars for nurses, aestheticians and other trained skin care specialists working in the offices of plastic surgeons certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeryor the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Attendees will also have access to exhibits from companies providing the latest products and services for medically-supervised skin care. In addition, Networking Focus Groups will be a new feature of this year’s meeting, replacing previous years’ Roundtable Discussions in response to many requests from SPSSCS members for more networking time.
“We are trying some new things at this year’s meeting, which has the most impressive list of presenters yet,” said SPSSCS President-Elect and Program Chair, Susan Wells. “Networking Focus Groups will give members more opportunities to network with their peers.”
Skin Care 2011 covers the most cutting-edge trends in skin care treatments, including updates on photodynamic therapy and other light-based options from American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) member, Frank E. Barone, MD, who will present “State of the Art: Comprehensive Medical Skin Care for Skin Cancer Prevention & Treatment.” Photodynamic therapy has significant benefits in the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, acne inflammation and other skin disorders, and can effectively rejuvenate photo-damaged skin. Dr. Barone’s presentation will review the technique and application of photodynamic therapy and the unique role it can play in a comprehensive medical skin care program, along with the application of other light-based options such as intense pulsed light (IPL) and light emitting diodes (LED).
Other highlights include “How to Maximize Your Practice Without the Use of Laser Technology,” by Kathy Leighton and Cindy Steele, which will discuss and demonstrate techniques to assemble a well-rounded, successful practice without the use of lasers, including anti-aging skin care products, physical, chemical and mechanical exfoliation techniques, light therapies and physician expertise.
A course geared toward master level nurse injectors, “Achieving Excellence in Facial Rejuvenation…the Evolution of Injectables,” presented by Kim Ragone, RN, BSN, will discuss ways to simplify advanced injectable filler techniques without compromising patient safety and optimal outcomes. Complex case studies, before and after photos, combination treatments, and the management of complications will be discussed, while injection of various fillers will be presented during a live demonstration.

FACTS ABOUT MEDICALLY-SUPERVISED SKIN CARE:
Medically-supervised skin care, administered by licensed professionals, provides patients with safe, clinically-tested treatments that are proven effective, as well as expert guidance in selecting appropriate products for home use -- products with stronger, more effective ingredients than are available over-the-counter.
Medically-supervised skin care has become part of today’s plastic surgery practice. Among members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), 49%* employ a skin care specialist on staff. An additional 9%* of ASAPS members contract the services of an independent skin care specialist.
