Spanish-Language Station Wins Top TV-News Prize In ASAPS 2001 Journalistic Achievement Awards
New York, NY (June 29, 2001) — The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) has announced the winners of its 2001 Journalistic Achievement Awards. For the first time, a Spanish-language entry has won the top award in the Television News Category. Other winners were selected for outstanding coverage of cosmetic plastic surgery in Television Feature, Newspaper, Magazine and Internet categories.
Ana Galicia of WSCV-TV Telemundo in Hialeah, FL, was recognized for a three-part news report focusing on safety considerations in cosmetic surgery. The report provided consumers with important information on choosing a qualified plastic surgeon, and gave tips on what to expect before and after surgery.
Elisa Rothstein, of Film Garden Entertainment, won the ASAPS Award in the Television Feature Category for a one-hour special, airing on the Discovery Channel, that followed several patients through cosmetic surgery, exploring their motivations and the psychological benefits they achieved from their surgical results.
Other winners were: Olivia Barker for an article in USA Today examining online bidding for cosmetic surgery; Alexandra Greeley, for a comprehensive article on lipoplasty (liposuction) in FDA Consumer Magazine; and Larry Keller of CNN.com for an interactive feature on the things men do to remain competitive in the workplace, including cosmetic surgery.
The ASAPS Journalistic Achievement Awards were established in 1991 in recognition of the talent, effort and commitment required to achieve quality reporting on issues related to cosmetic plastic surgery. Judging is conducted by a panel of communications professionals and plastic surgeons, who evaluate entries for their public education value, accuracy of information, balanced reporting and journalistic style. Winners receive a framed certificate and a $500 cash prize.
