Can laser hair removal trigger my discoid lupus?

Q:

I have discoid lupus that has been in remission for 5 years. I would like to get laser hair removal of the underarms. Can laser hair removal trigger my discoid lupus?

A:

Discoid lupus is a skin condition. There is no evidence that laser hair removal would trigger a relapse in the discoid lupus. I would recommend that you talk with your rheumatologist and plastic surgeon. I also recommend that the plastic surgeon does the laser hair removal for you.
