Am I a candidate for breast reduction?

Q:

I have size H breasts. When I was 18 I injured my back on concrete and since then it has given me nothing but pain. It doesn't help having huge breasts that also cause my back severe amounts of pain. I'm on my husbands' insurance and my regular doctor said that I have to be under 200 lbs before I can have a breast reduction but most of my weight is in my breasts.

A:

It is a good idea to get down to your goal weight before undergoing a breast reduction because some of the breast usually consists of fat and will fluctuate with weight changes.

Without a detailed history and an examination, it is impossible to judge how much of your back pain is being caused by your breast size and how much is being caused by other concerns including your weight and your back injury history.  Generally, most insurance carriers will not approve a breast reduction procedure is the patient's Body Mass Index (BMI) is above a certain level.  The impact on back pain from a breast reduction in patients who are significantly overweight is highly variable which is why most patients are encouraged to decrease their weight before a breast reduction procedure.  A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon and preferably a member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery can help you determine if you are a good candidate for a breast reduction or are further steps needed before you can proceed.
