I am having problems with healing after breast reconstruction done at the time of my mastectomy. The mastectomy was done more than seven weeks ago and has not healed. It has been proposed to me to have a "skin graft" so it will heal faster and I can get on with my chemotherapy. Are there any risks that can ensue if I follow through with this procedure?
A:
It all depends on the type of reconstruction and what the wound looks like. If the wound is small then it possibly could be debrided (cleaned) and closed. A larger wound may be treated with a skin graft if there is no exposure of an implant or other foreign body.

Is there such a procedure as removing fatty tissue from the abdomen area and placing it into the buttocks?
A:
Yes, there is such a procedure and it is called fat injections or fat grafting. Fat is harvested by liposuction and the concentrated fat is then injected into the buttocks to improve their contour.

Why do some surgeons use an incision to remove excess eyelid folds if they have a laser? Does a total laser resurfacing tighten up the face all over? I have some "jowl" look but do not want to undergo a partial facelift yet.
A:
Lasers can be used to tighten a small excess of eyelid skin. Patients with a larger excess of skin would do better to have the skin excised using the standard technique for lower eyelid surgery. Also, laser resurfacing alone does not allow manipulation of the herniated fat that causes lower eyelid bulges. Finally, the down time associated with laser resurfacing is actually longer than with skin excision techniques.
