Acupuncture for cosmetic surgery?
April 27, 2011
Acupuncture is an age-old medicinal practice that has been known to cure or ease a number of ailments, from aching bones to dietary issues. A new trend in the field may come as a surprise to some - it seems that some practitioners are now attempting to use holistic medicine to remove or reduce facial wrinkles, according to NBC.
"What we are trying to do is create micro-trauma under the skin to take advantage of the body's natural healing process," Rick Bernard, a licensed acupuncturist, told the news source. "Just as your skin heals from a cut, to heal from these tiny needle sticks your body starts making more collagen, which fills in wrinkles."
The acupuncturist uses acupuncture needles to treat crow's feet as well as lines around the mouth. However, the procedure is not used to reduce wrinkling of the forehead.
Unlike traditional methods of cosmetic surgery and skincare products, there have been no substantial trials or studies done on the affects of acupuncture on facial rejuvenation. According to the Physicians Coalition for Injectable Safety, hyaluronic acid fillers and longer-lasting dermal fillers can also fill in wrinkles, sculpt the face and restore a more youthful appearance.
