Couples opting for plastic surgeries together

Is it true that a couple that undergoes plastic surgery together, stays together?

A recent Today Show report suggested that many couples are now seeking out various surgeries together.

"Years ago, we would see a wife come in and she would say, 'I can't let my husband know what I'm doing,'" a New Jersey-based plastic surgeon who has witnessed an increase in couples wanting plastic surgeries told the news provider. "And then the husband would come in and he would say, 'You know what, this is a secret, please don't tell my wife.'"

Nowadays, many spouses are no longer trying to hide their surgeries or procedures from each other. Instead, they feel if one person is doing something to improve his or her appearance, the other should too.

Overall, consumers are seeking out more plastic surgeries. According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the demand for plastic surgery procedures increased almost 9 percent between 2009 and 2010.

While women make up the majority (92 percent) of patients, the number of men who are undergoing surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures is on the rise. ASAPS reports that the number of cosmetic procedures for men increased over 88 percent from 1997 to 2010.

Doctors say the fact that more men are open to the idea of cosmetic surgery may be fueling the increase in couples having procedures done together.

"I think it's a great experience to grow younger together," patient Ira Almeas, who underwent several non-surgical procedures with his wife, told the Today Show. "We feel a little bit more refreshed, a little bit more energy, and it's just another part of our life together that we're sharing."

The mission of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) includes medical education, public education and patient advocacy.
