FDA to vote on expansion of Restylane use
May 5, 2011
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently considering expanding the approved usage of the injectable filler Restylane. An advisory panel will speak to the FDA today about the potential of using the filler for lip enhancement, according to My Health News Daily.
Before the information about the drug's use is sent to the FDA for final approval, the advisory board must first vote to recommend the use of Restylane for the lips.
Currently, the filler is only approved to treat wrinkles of the face. However, physicians have long been injecting Restylane into the lips as an “off-label” treatment that gets good results. Several professionals in the industry told the news source that the FDA's approval of the new use of the treatment would have little to no impact on their practice.
While physicians are permitted to inject Restylane into the lips, FDA approval would make it possible for marketers to advertise its use to the public.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Restylane treatments last for six months or more, and typically cost around $600 per syringe. It is important to go to a qualified injector who has both experience and credentials for any cosmetic treatments.
